Charlene Strickland, Head of the Department of Communication, joined the faculty in the fall of 1983. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) with a first teaching field of speech and second teaching field of English. Her Master of Arts degree is also from SWT with a major in speech communication, followed by doctoral work in communication at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. During her tenure at Hardin-Simmons University, Ms. Strickland has been received the Cullen Professor Teaching Award, a peer recognition for excellence in teaching (1989), been named the Faculty Member of the Year (2002), and received the Teaching Excellence award from the Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts (2004). Ms. Strickland is a life member of the Texas Speech Communication Association and in 2002 received the organization’s award for Outstanding Service. During her sabbatical (1989-90) for work on the Ph.D. in communication, Ms. Strickland was named the outstanding graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma.
In addition to teaching at Hardin-Simmons University, Ms. Strickland has taught at Southwest Texas State University and Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas and high school in Georgetown, Texas (1979-82). Part of her emphasis within the Department of Communication is work toward training future teachers, particularly those pursuing certification in secondary speech. As recently as 2010, Ms. Strickland worked with ETS (Educational Testing Services) on the certification exam for Texas secondary speech certification.
Ms. Strickland serves HSU and the University Interscholastic League as a Regional Director, as well as serving UIL as a consultant for speech events since 1982. Ms. Strickland also supports the Boy Scouts of America by being an approved merit badge counselor for public speaking.
Ms. Strickland lives in Abilene with her husband, Larry Bevill, and they have one son who attends HSU. Ms. Strickland enjoys sporting events, particularly any sport in which her son is a participant! She enjoys scrapbooking, watching football with her husband, and traveling with her family.
